Our two Physiotherapists who specialise and have a special interest in paediatric physio are Cooper Rice at our Currambine clinic or Dan Fitzgerald at our North Beach clinic.

Frequently Asked Question: What is Growing Pains?

Growing pains are often described as an ache or throb, particularly in the legs and behind the knees, affecting 15-30% of children. The pain doesn’t present daily, instead coming and going. It typically presents in late afternoon/evening after big days of activity. Sometimes symptoms can wake a sleeping child, but come good in the morning. Children who experience growing pains are otherwise in good health and are not limited on days when the pain is not present.

Growing pain are diagnosed by exclusion of other causes of the symptoms. Whilst pain can be tricky in children, physiotherapy can support your child by accurately assessing and evaluating whether the presentation is growing pains or otherwise.

Times to present to Physio would include:

  • Persistent pain
  • Pain associated with injury
  • Limping
  • Affecting a child’s activities

Further Paediatric Physio Assessment and Management

All Move Forward Physiotherapists will be able to advise on paediatric conditions but for a more comprehensive assessment, treatment and plan please see Cooper Rice at our Currambine clinic or Dan Fitzgerald at our North Beach clinic. Both Physios have completed further training in Paediatrics, with Dan having prior experience as a running coach in the paediatric age group. Our paediatric Physios have particular interest in the following:

  • Torticollis / Plagiocephaly
  • Motor Milestones (such as crawling, sitting and walking)
  • Developing Gross Motor Skills (Strength, Coordination, Balance + Flexibility)
  • Dyspraxia / Developmental Coordination Disorder
  • Assessment and Development of Ball Skills and Playground Play
  • Assessment and Development of Walking and Running
  • Hypermobility related Conditions (Pain, Fatigue and Muscle Function)
  • The Limping Child

Consults will provide an opportunity to discuss the history as well as an in-depth evaluation of the presenting concern, resulting in developing an action plan between therapist, parent and child to get the most out of physiotherapy.
