Shockwave Therapy
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that utilises acoustic waves to promote healing in various musculoskeletal conditions. Shockwaves through mechanotransduction, induce biological effects on tissues and cells. They positively influence some cell functions and local homeostasis, thus influencing the tissue’s self-healing capabilities. Evidence from basic science and clinical trials seems to indicate that shock waves induce proliferation, migration, differentiation and apoptosis of cells, including stem cells, which significantly contribute to tissue healing and regeneration. Shockwave in Perth is available at our Currambine clinic with our senior physiotherapist Ronnie Bhalvani.
When to See a Physiotherapist for Shockwave Therapy
You may want to consider shock wave therapy if you are experiencing:
- Chronic Inflammation: Persistent pain in areas like the shoulder, elbow, knee, or heel that hasn’t improved with traditional treatments.
- Tendon Injuries: Conditions such as tendonitis or tendinopathy, especially in the Achilles tendon, patellar tendon, or rotator cuff.
- Plantar Fasciitis: Ongoing heel pain or discomfort in the foot.
- Muscle Strains: Stiffness or pain from muscle strains that have not resolved with rest and rehabilitation.
- Specific conditions: Rotator cuff tendinopathy, Lateral tendinopathy of the elbow, Distal biceps tendinopathy, Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome, Hamstring tendinopathy, Adductor tendinopathy, Patellar tendinopathy, Pes anserine tendinopathy, Achilles tendinopathy, Peroneal tendinopathy, Plantar fasciopathy, Delayed healing/non-union, Stress fracture, Osgood Schlatter disease, Medial tibial stress syndrome, Bone marrow oedema, Osteochondritis dissecans, Avascular necrosis, Myofascial pain, Muscle strain without discontinuity
If you’ve tried conservative treatments (like rest, ice, or physiotherapy) without significant improvement, consulting a physiotherapist about shockwave therapy may be beneficial.
How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?
-
- Consultation and Assessment: Your physiotherapist will assess your condition, discuss your symptoms, and determine if shock wave therapy is appropriate for you.
- Treatment Process: During the treatment, a handheld device generates shock waves that are applied to the affected area. These waves penetrate the skin and target underlying tissues.
- Treatment Frequency: Typically, a series of sessions (usually 6 but can be extended up to 10) is recommended, spaced 5 days to a week apart, depending on your specific condition and response to therapy.
- Aftercare: Post-treatment, you might experience mild soreness, similar to that after exercise. It’s generally recommended to avoid high-impact activities for 2 – 3 days following each session.
